Every week during the 2017 season, we’ll check in with California’s five MLB teams. Who’s up? Who’s down? Who has the cheapest ticket this week and who will play in the best series? The Golden State is home to the best position player in baseball, the sport’s best pitcher, and the 25 tryhards who play for the Padres.
Best Record Last Week: San Francisco Giants, 6-0.
Worst Record Last Week: Oakland Athletics, 1-5.
Best Attendance (cumulative avg.): Los Angeles Dodgers, 44,632.
Worst Attendance (cumulative avg.): Oakland, 18,149.
Huell Howser Memorial ‘Is This Guy Serious!?’ Outstanding Performance Video:
On Saturday, (the 6-0 this week!) Giants outfielder Austin Slater parked one over Andrew McCutcheon’s head. We had to include one Giants highlight this season, contractually.
Gob Bluth’s Huge Mistake of the Week:
On Wednesday, the Dodgers had all the momentum going into the bottom of the ninth inning in Anaheim after tying the game at 2-2 in the top. The Angels Cameron Maybin struck to end the inning—supposedly—but LA (of LA) catcher Yasmani Grandal dropped the ball and overthrew first base as the Halos’ Ben Revere scampered home with the winning run.
Cheapest Ticket This Week: Despite their 6-0 week, the Giants are still bumping along the bottom for ticket prices—you can find a $6 seat for Marlins vs. Giants Friday.
California Series to Watch: 7/4-7/6 Dodgers at Diamondbacks. The Dodgers have a comfortable 2.5 game lead in the NL West, but those kinds of leads can disappear quickly during head-to-head matchups.
Athletics: 7/3-7/5 vs. White Sox, 7/6-7/9 @ Mariners.
Giants: 7/4-7/6 @ Tigers, 7/7-7/9 vs. Marlins.
Dodgers: 7/4-7/6 vs. Diamondbacks, 7/7-7/9 vs. Royals.
Angels: 7/3-7/5 @ Twins, 7/7-7/9 @ Rangers.
Padres: 7/4-7/6 @ Indians, 7/7-7/9 @ Phillies.
Home series in bold.
